Dear friends and colleagues,

According to the old tradition of The Pushkin Society in America, in 2011 there have been created some files pertaining to the Russian and Ukrainian emigration. These files are named after Dr. Catharine Lodyjensky.  The Pushkin Society was founded in New York in 1935  and remains to be popular and at the same time it gradually becomes a center of the history of the above mentioned emigration.

Dr. Lodyjensky immigrated to Paris in the 1920-ies together with her parents.  Being a Menshevik, her father continued his political activity.  Before the war the family moved to the United States where they kept in touch with all of the Russian emigrants' elite. Ekaterina became a paediatrician and began working for the medical commission for the emigrants arriving to Ellis Island.  After retiring in 1993 Dr. Lodyjensky headed the Pushkin Society until the end of her life in 2009.  She was its sponsor, organizer and  photographer, she was also the one who kept all the documentation.  On her hands Dr. Catharine Lodyjensky had different diaries, booklets, programs, newspaper clippings, reports by the Pushkin Society founder Boris Brazol, as well as some documents concerning the Mensheviks, dissidents and Ukrainian activities abroad.

And so, the availability of the files became a must.  These files include fragments of some documentary collection from The Ukrainian Institute of America. For many years now I have been in contact with this Institute.   In 2011 an archeographic project "Pushkin and Emigration in America" has been started.  Together with the publishing house "The Northern Cross" we published  post cards of all the known Pushkin monuments in the United States as well as the photographs of all oldest society members.  There are many articles and general information published by me and other authors in different periodicals dating back to 1993, that can be found  on Internet.
However, I would like to stress the fact that most part of the information, Ukrainian files in particular, some diaspora and general information, various topics on the emigration history and a few others have not been published and are presented here for the first time.  Such publications will definitely increase in number after they are processed.  All texts, pictures and filing material can be used in any form.  The reference to the archives named after  Dr. Lodyjensky is absolutely necessary.  All rights reserved.
Our modern life gives us a precious gift: new opportunities, more fruitful, professional cooperation, offers us new and necessary contacts, allowing us to bring to realization our mutual ideas.
You are more than welcome to this useful information and let it take you to your new accomplishments.

      Respectfully,
   Dr. Victoriya Kurchenko
